Honoring the legacy of Catherine “Kay” Coates
Look no further than Kay Coates to find a true Trust for Public Land champion. Kay was an enthusiastic member of our TPL community for many years and served as chair of our New York Advisory Board. As a founding member of the New York Playground Committee, she connected TPL with the Future Leaders Institute, a group committed to fostering the next generation of learners and leaders. This experience inspired her to fund the creation of the PS 242/FLI playground in Harlem, a magical place that remains important to the community. She also ensured that the work she cared so deeply about would continue into the future. By naming Trust for Public Land as a beneficiary of her IRA, Kay established a legacy that will carry on the success of our New York program—creating green spaces, building parks, and transforming schoolyards in areas that need it most.
After receiving degrees in both Agricultural Economics and Finance, Kay pursued an illustrious career in banking for over 20 years. She also took time to enjoy her passions: biking through New York City, swimming in the rivers of France—her home away from home—and exploring the parks that she held so dear. After retiring, Kay moved to New York City and quickly became involved with TPL. She was passionate about providing urban green spaces for those unable to experience national parks and wilderness areas first-hand.
We hope Kay inspires you to think about the future generations who will benefit from the outdoor spaces we are creating. There are many ways for you to partner with Trust for Public Land, whether through giving a current-use gift of cash, creating a planned gift through your estate plan, spreading the word in person and online, or becoming a volunteer. Our work to expand access to the outdoors for all is not possible without you. We are extremely grateful to people like Kay—and like you—who enable us to build on this crucial work. Thank you!
