I live my life by an 11th Commandment: “Thou shalt be joyous no matter what.” And I ask myself, “Why not also help kids live joyous lives?” If you have enough to send your own children to school and provide access to the joys of the outdoors, then why not help other kids who may not have the same opportunity. Families thrive from well planted seeds and roots, and I believe the family of the world is part of my family. My seeds were planted in Newark, NJ, and my roots have flourished in the San Francisco Bay Area. As a child, raised by a remarkable single mother in a modest urban apartment, I remember my first experience visiting a home in the country and delighting in the beauty of the surrounding greenery. Later, at a community summer camp for the first time, I would get up early in the morning, before all of the other children, to take in the joy of the outdoors. I can still remember that wonderful feeling of running barefoot through the grass with the morning dew under my toes. I am still inspired by nature and often express my feelings through music. I love this quote from Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, “Should you shield the canyons from the windstorms you would never see the true beauty of their carvings,” which inspired me to create and record an album “Carvings In The Canyon.”

How honored I am to support Trust for Public Land with their projects in New Jersey and the Bay Area creating parks and protecting land for generations to come. The recent announcement of TPL’s role in forever protecting the Martha property in Tiburon as public open space is a wonderful gift to us all and especially to me as I celebrate my double infinity 88th birthday. So, here’s wishing a joyous 50th Birthday to Trust for Public Land from “The Purple Lady!”
